Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government to deliver 2027 state budget bill to parliament on Thursday

Lisbon, Oct. 8, 2026 (Lusa) - The Portuguese Government is set to table the draft state budget bill for 2027 in Parliament on Thursday, two days before the deadline.

The information was provided in a statement by the Ministry of Finance, which states that the document will be tabled in Parliament at around 2.15 pm and presented at a press conference at 4.00 pm.

By law, the Government's draft state budget must be formally tabled in parliament by 10 October. However, as 10 October falls on a Saturday this year, the deadline would be extended to 12 October, the following Monday.

The statement notes that the Minister of Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, will submit the 2027 state budget proposal to parliament at around 2.15 pm and present it at a press conference at 4.00 pm at the Ministry of Finance.

The Government will approve the draft budget at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday morning.

Parliament will hold a first reading debate and vote on the Government's draft state budget for 2027 on 27 and 28 October, with the final vote scheduled for 24 November. The document's passage is already assured by the Socialist Party's (PS) announced abstention.

Last week, following meetings with the political parties to present the broad outlines of the draft budget, the minister of finance stated that the document forecasts a surplus of between 0.1 and 0.2% of Gross Domestic Product for next year and growth of around 2%.

On that occasion, Miranda Sarmento called on the parties to act responsibly during the debate on the 2027 state budget, warning that any measure approved without offsetting measures could «put the country in a budget deficit».
