Praia, Sept. 23, 2026 (Lusa) - Cabo Verde and China have signed a framework agreement on economic cooperation and are preparing a broader agreement, to be signed during a visit by the Cabo Verdean prime minister to China in November, the Government announced on Wednesday.
«A framework agreement on economic cooperation between Cabo Verde and China was signed by [the minister of the economy] António Baptista and China's Minister of Commerce,» reads a statement issued by the ministry of the economy, trade, industry and digital transition regarding the minister's visit to the Asian country between 2 and 15 September.
The agreement «lays the foundations for strengthening economic and trade cooperation» and «the prime minister of Cabo Verde is due to visit China in November to sign a broader agreement aimed at consolidating and expanding areas of bilateral cooperation».
According to the statement, «the mission also enabled contacts to be made with a view to concluding future twinning agreements between Cabo Verdean municipalities and Chinese provinces».
Also on the table is «investment by Chinese private companies in Cabo Verde» – an area in which «the Chinese government offers incentives for business initiatives with a social and economic impact in partner countries».
The Cabo Verdean delegation visited «the customs facilities, where opportunities for cooperation were identified» in this area.
«This [customs] cooperation could move forward in the short and medium term and include the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practice, as well as the strengthening of technical capacity and trade facilitation.» António Baptista also held a meeting with the leadership of the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
«The minister gave a very positive assessment of this visit and considers that the results of the mission represent an important step not only towards deepening relations of friendship and cooperation with the People's Republic of China, but also towards the start of something innovative,» the statement added.
Among the new developments will be «direct cooperation between Cabo Verdean and Chinese municipalities, independent of central governments, and securing funding that can have a swifter social impact on the country's communities».
