Lisbon, Sept. 23, 2026 (Lusa) - The public debt ratio stood at 89.2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025, below the estimate published earlier this year, according to the notification under the Excessive Deficit Procedure submitted to Brussels.

«General government gross debt is expected to have fallen to 89.2% of gross domestic product (93.0% in the previous year),» states the document released by Statistics Portugal (INE) on Wednesday.

This figure revises the results reported in the first notification under the Excessive Deficit Procedure, published in March, which indicated that the public debt-to-GDP ratio was set to stand at 89.7% in 2025, below the State Budget's forecast of 90.2%.

This document also includes the government's forecasts for 2026, which indicate that the government expects the public debt-to-GDP ratio to reach 87.5% this year.
