Praia, Sept. 10, 2026 (Lusa) - The management of Televisão de Cabo Verde (TCV) acknowledged in a statement that its coverage of Saturday's accident on Fogo, which claimed 25 lives, could have been better, but emphasised that the state broadcaster has limited resources.

«TCV's management is the first to acknowledge that the station's response could have been better», but «the response was constrained by the resources available», reads the management document, which is the subject of dismissal proceedings by the administration of Rádio Televisão Cabo Verde (RTC).

According to the statement to which Lusa gained access on Thursday, «one can only fully assess the response capacity of a public television broadcaster when considering the technical, human and financial resources made available to it».

«The ease and immediacy of social media have profoundly altered the way the public receives information», a context which, the management noted, «requires TCV to have a greater capacity to respond, more resources and appropriate emergency procedures».

Management concluded that «the board of directors must fully assume its responsibility for creating these conditions», including «investment decisions, content acquisition, recruitment of staff and the provision of essential technical resources».

On Monday, RTC's management decided to initiate proceedings to dismiss the public television broadcaster's management, citing various failings, culminating in delayed coverage of Saturday's accident, which the station first reported on Sunday.

The case was referred to the Media Regulatory Authority (ARC), which has a binding opinion on appointing and dismissing directors of state-owned media organisations responsible for programming and news.

A coach carrying schoolchildren from the island of Fogo and other passengers on an excursion veered off the road and plunged from a height of around 30 metres on Saturday, leaving 25 people dead and 13 injured.
