Macau, China, Sept. 4, 2026 (Lusa) - Residents of both Macau and Angola will now be able to enter each other's countries without the need for a visa, following an agreement on the mutual waiver of visa requirements signed on Friday between the two jurisdictions.
At the signing ceremony, Wong Sio Chak, Secretary for Administration and Justice of the Macau Government, stated that the agreement «will make life significantly easier» for residents of both sides, particularly in the areas of tourism, academic exchange and trade.
Wong added that the measure «will promote greater interaction between the people» and «deepen civilisational exchange and cultural integration».
«We take this opportunity to invite more friends from Angola to visit, invest and travel to Macau, so that they may experience the vitality, inclusivity and opportunities this city offers,» he emphasised.
Also present at the ceremony was Eduardo Velasco Galiano, Angola's consul in the Chinese Special Administrative Region and Angola's delegate to the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese Language Countries (Macau Forum), who stressed that «on several occasions, businesspeople from both sides have been forced to turn back» «Your gesture on this day not only removes these bureaucratic barriers but also definitively dispels the uncertainty that hung over our trade relations, opening the door to a future of greater prosperity and economic exchange,» he stressed.
Angola becomes the fourth Portuguese Language Country, after Portugal, Brazil and Cabo Verde, to benefit from Macau's visa exemption scheme.
According to a statement from the Macau Identification Service, once the agreement comes into force, Macau residents holding a Macau SAR (Macau Special Administrative Region) passport will be able to enter the Republic of Angola without a visa and remain there for a maximum period of 30 days, with the same conditions applying to holders of a valid passport from the Republic of Angola.
The date on which the agreement comes into force will be announced in due course, according to the statement, which does not specify a specific date.
