Italy's health spending dropped to 6.2% of GDP in 2025 from 6.3% the previous year, putting it in last place in the G7, according to a report released by the GIMBE medical foundation on Wednesday.
    It said this was well below the average of 7.1% of GDP dedicated to health spending by the countries of the OECD and the EU.
    It said an additional 36 billion euros needs to be spent on the public health service in Italy a year to bridge the gap.
    "Underfunding of public healthcare is no longer an accounting issue for insiders, it is a structural problem that has weakened the national health service and compromised access to a fundamental right," said GIMBE President Nino Cartabellotta.
