Lisbon, Aug. 31, 2026 (Lusa) - The unemployment rate in Portugal stood at 5.7% in July, unchanged from June and 0.1 percentage point lower than in July last year, according to provisional data released by Statistics Portugal on Monday.

In July, «the unemployment rate stood at 5.7%, the same as in April and June 2026, but 0.1 percentage points lower than in July 2025», according to Statistics Portugal (INE).

The statistics office added that in July, the number of people in employment reached 5,347,000, a figure 1.6% (82,900 people) higher than a year earlier but 0.1% (7,100 people) lower than in June this year.

In the month under review, the unemployment rate for women was 6.4%, while the rate for men was 4.9%, the lowest since February 1998.

Among young people, the unemployment rate was 20.1%, compared with 4.6% among adults.

The labour force rose year-on-year in July by 1.4% to 5,667,300 people, despite a 0.2% month-on-month fall.

Conversely, the non-labour force fell by 1.3% year-on-year and rose by 0.7% month-on-month, totalling 2,419,500 people.

The labour underutilisation rate stood at 9.5%, «higher than the previous month (0.2 percentage points), but lower than three months earlier (0.2 percentage points) and the same month of the previous year (0.6 percentage points).» The inactivity rate, which defines the ratio of the inactive working-age population to the total working-age population, fell to 29.6%, reaching its lowest level since February 1998.
