The government on Wednesday night extended a 17-cent cut on diesel duties until September 5 and said this would be followed by more selective measures based in household income.
    The money to cover the costs of the extension - an estimated 130 million euro - will come from a complicated mechanism of withholding taxes on the dividends of major energy companies who have benefitted from the recent surge in energy prices due to the Iran war.
    The centre-left opposition called the extension "the umpteenth imperceptible, tiny discount" and relaunched a proposal for a big windfall tax on energy giant's profits.
