Ponta Delgada, Portugal, Aug. 25, 2026 (Lusa) - The low-cost airline Transavia, part of the Air France-KLM group, announced on Tuesday that it will launch a route between Ponta Delgada, in the Azores, and Brussels, in Belgium, in the summer of 2027.
«In the summer of 2027, the airline will add Ponta Delgada, Heraklion and Thessaloniki to its network. Tickets for these destinations will go on sale from 16 September. With these additions, Transavia is responding to growing demand from Belgian customers for affordable flights within Europe and to North Africa,» Transavia revealed today in a statement.
The Franco-Dutch airline recently established a local crew base at Brussels Airport.
Transavia has been connecting Brussels to Faro since 2022 and, earlier this month, announced a new route between Brussels and Porto, with three flights a week, starting on 14 December.
The low-cost carrier's third route from Brussels to Portugal has now been announced, to João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, the largest in the Azores archipelago.
«Belgium is an important market for Transavia. Since the start of our operations at Brussels Airport, we have been building our presence in Belgium step by step. We started with two aircraft, added a third and, recently, have accommodated a fourth aircraft in Brussels,» said Paul Terstegge, managing director of Transavia Netherlands, quoted in a press release.
In the summer of 2026, the Azores saw operations by 16 airlines, 30 routes and connections to 12 countries, as revealed in July by the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, Berta Cabral.
For the past nine months, the archipelago has recorded year-on-year falls in the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation, according to the latest figures from the Azores Regional Statistics Service (SREA), released at the end of July.
In the first half of 2026, the Azores recorded 1.8 million overnight stays in tourist accommodation, down 4.6% on the same period last year, and 578,400 guests, down 3.6%.
Transavia, the low-cost airline of the Air France-KLM group, operates nearly 400 routes from France, the Netherlands and Belgium to Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
In 2025, Transavia France carried around 16 million passengers.
