Faro, Portugal, Aug. 24, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's national republican guard (the GNR) arrested 16 people during a series of routine traffic checks carried out in the districts of Albufeira and Loulé, in the region of Faro, on Saturday night and in the early hours of Sunday, the force announced on Monday.

Ten of the arrests were for drink-driving, four for drug trafficking, one for driving without a licence and one for resisting and coercing a public official, the GNR stated in a press release from the Faro Territorial Command.

Thirteen doses of hashish, three doses of cocaine, 2.25 grams of MDMA and 3.22 grams of ecstasy were seized, and 37 fines were issued for traffic offences and three for «police-related offences».

The GNR also announced that, during the same period, it had carried out an operation in the districts of Faro and Loulé aimed at inspecting motorbikes and mopeds, «with a particular focus on high-risk behaviour associated with serious road accidents», which resulted in 18 fines issued for traffic offences and seven motorbikes being seized.

The GNR explained that these checks were part of the work carried out by the Faro Territorial Command to prevent and monitor risky driving behaviour, ensuring road safety and promoting the safety of people and property.

The enforcement operations that led to the arrest of these 16 people were carried out by officers from the territorial unit and the traffic and intervention detachments of the GNR's Faro Territorial Command.
