Nampula, Mozambique, Aug. 24, 2026 (Lusa) - The death toll from Sunday's road accident in the Mozambican province of Nampula has risen to seven, the authorities announced on Monday.
Speaking to Lusa, the spokesperson for Nacala General Hospital said that a further death had brought the death toll from the accident in the region of Nacala-à-Velha, in the northern province of Nampula, to seven.
The fatality was among a group of five seriously injured people who were admitted to the hospital following the collision between two vehicles. «Of those admitted alive, only one pregnant woman died in hospital; three have been discharged and one remains in hospital,» added Augusto Maduco.
According to the National Road Transport Institute (Inatro) in Nampula province, the accident resulted from a head-on collision between a goods lorry and a minibus on Sunday afternoon on National Road 12 (N12), on the bridge over the Nacala-à-Velha dam.
Preliminary data from Inatro pointed to speeding and the lorry driver crossing into the opposite lane as the probable causes of the accident; the driver of the lorry is on the run and is being sought by the police.
«The articulated lorry, which was travelling from Monapo to Nacala Porto, is believed to have veered into the opposite carriageway in an area where traffic was restricted, colliding head-on with a Toyota Hiace travelling in the opposite direction,» reads the statement previously released by Inatro.
Road accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in Mozambique. Official figures indicate that the country recorded 611 road accidents in 2025, resulting in 830 deaths, prompting the Government to proceed with a review of the Highway Code.
In June, the Government approved, at a Cabinet meeting, authorisation for the revision of the Highway Code, which provides for the introduction of a points-based driving licence and the use of CCTV cameras for traffic monitoring.
The revision also provides for the strengthening of mechanisms for monitoring and controlling road traffic offences and the harmonisation of the provisions of the Highway Code with national criminal law.
