An espresso at a bar in Italy today costs almost a quarter more than it did five years ago, according to a new study from a consumer group.
The Centre for Training and Research on Consumption, in collaboration with Assoutenti, has conducted a new study on coffee cup prices, analyzing most recently the new price increases that have affected coffee throughout 2026.
It said the price increases aren't stopping.
Colombian coffee exports are suffering a serious logistical disruption due to the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the country.
Based on official transport ministry data collected across various Italian provinces, an espresso costs an average of €1.29 in Italy, a full 25 cents more than in 2021, with an average increase of 24.2%, but with highly varied trends depending on the region, according to the CRC.
Bolzano remains the city with the highest price, at €1.51 per cup.
At the other end of the ranking, Messina is now the cheapest, with an average price of €1.06.
"Other factors are behind the increases recorded at bars, such as rising energy and management costs for operators, which are then passed on to the final consumer price," warns Furio Truzzi, president of the CRC's scientific committee.
