Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Businesses focusing on attracting US investment

Maputo, Aug. 5, 2026 (Lusa) - Mozambique's Foundation for Business Competitiveness (Fundec) stated on Wednesday that it had received assurances of support from the United States to boost the attraction of US investment to Mozambique, including large-scale projects in the energy sector.

«We are here to build this bridge and also to attract US investment to Mozambique. They have our full support for this idea and will make every necessary and possible effort to attract US businesses,» said Fundec's chief economist during a meeting with an official delegation from the US embassy, in Maputo.

According to Clésio Foia, interest from US investors in the Mozambican market could see further developments in the coming months, pointing to a possible decision by ExxonMobil regarding the Coral Norte LNG project in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique.

«In fact, as we are aware, a potential investment decision by ExxonMobil regarding Coral Norte is already on the cards for September, specifically in the Rovuma Basin, involving an investment of over $30 billion [€26.1 billion],» he stated.

According to Foia, the collaboration is also expected to include drafting a report on the business environment in the country, which Fundec intends to turn into a reference tool for investors: «It will assess the business environment and dynamic business practices and will serve as a barometer so that all national and international investors can gauge where we stand.» He added that the intention is also to compare Mozambique's performance with internationally recognised standards.

«We will create synergies to ensure that this document serves as a national benchmark, but is also comparable with other international instruments,» he said.

The announcement comes at a time when another institution, the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), is conducting a business mission to the United States, bringing together more than 30 Mozambican businesspeople in Houston and Washington, with a focus on value chains in the oil and gas sector.

As part of the visit, the CTA reports that it organised a business forum this week with US partners and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Texas-Africa Chamber of Commerce, with the aim of boosting bilateral trade, attracting investment and facilitating the integration of Mozambican companies into global supply chains.

The mission's agenda also includes visits to the US multinationals ExxonMobil and Halliburton, with the aim of identifying partnership opportunities for Mozambican companies, strengthening local content in liquefied natural gas projects and promoting the transfer of knowledge and technology.
