Lisbon, Aug. 3, 2026 (Lusa) - Car sales rose by 10.2% from January to July compared with the same period in 2025, with 180,423 new vehicles registered, according to figures released on Monday by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).

Of all the vehicles registered in the first seven months of the year, 155,237 were light passenger cars, 19,850 were light goods vehicles and 5,336 were heavy goods vehicles.

Among the new passenger cars registered between January and July, 74.9% were powered by alternative energy sources, particularly electric and hybrid vehicles.

According to ACAP, 26% of new passenger cars were electric.

In monthly terms, 22,480 motor vehicles were registered in Portugal in July 2026, an increase of 8.6% compared with the same month in 2025.

That month, 18,157 new light passenger cars were registered, a rise of 3.5% compared with the same period the previous year, whilst the light goods vehicle market recorded a 25.8% increase compared with July 2025, with 3,181 registered.

As for the heavy vehicle market, which encompasses both passenger and goods vehicles, July 2026 saw a year-on-year increase of 84.8%, with 1,142 vehicles in this category sold.
