Lisbon, Aug. 3, 2026 (Lusa) - In a written interview with Lusa, DE-CIX's chief executive (CEO), Ivo Ivanov, said that AI infrastructure should be developed in tandem with energy infrastructure, thereby increasing the capacity to utilise renewable energy.
When asked what can be done to mitigate the impact of energy consumption, the government said that «AI [artificial intelligence] infrastructure should be developed in tandem with energy infrastructure».
In other words, «this means increasing the use of renewable energy, improving the efficiency of data centres and processors, and locating computing capacity where sustainable energy is available».
For Ivo Ivanov, building artificial intelligence responsibly «is not just about technology — it is also about how we use resources efficiently».
In this regard, «we also need a more distributed infrastructure model» and «some AI workloads can run effectively in multiple locations, not just on a single hyperscale site».
DE-CIX «enables companies to securely interconnect distributed data centres, cloud platforms and AI infrastructures, allowing computing resources to be deployed where energy and capacity are available, whilst maintaining high performance and resilience».
The third edition of the annual global digital infrastructure conference, Atlantic Convergence, organised by DE-CIX, takes place this year at Pátio da Galé in Lisbon from 29 September to 1 October.
«The central theme of this year's Atlantic Convergence is how to build a sustainable and secure digital infrastructure to drive an AI-powered future,» he told Lusa.
AI is «often discussed in terms of algorithms and applications, but its success ultimately depends on the physical infrastructure: energy, data centres, terrestrial and submarine networks, satellites, cloud platforms and secure interconnection», he pointed out.
That is why Atlantic Convergence «brings together leaders from across the digital infrastructure ecosystem».
The CEO emphasised that DE-CIX launched Atlantic Convergence «because building the AI economy requires collaboration across companies, governments, and sectors».
«We believe that the AI race will not be won by algorithms alone. It will be won by those who build the infrastructure that connects AI securely, sustainably and across borders,» Ivanov added.
With this in mind, «our expectation is that participants will leave Lisbon with new partnerships, concrete projects and a shared commitment to strengthening the Atlantic as one of the world's leading digital infrastructure corridors. We invite everyone helping to shape this future to join us in Lisbon,» the CEO concluded.
