Lisbon, July 29, 2026 (Lusa) - Vodafone has chosen Portugal to host the Global Cyber Centre – Lisbon (GCC), its new strategic cybersecurity centre, and will employ around 40 specialists in the initial phase, the telecoms operator announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, Vodafone explains that the new centre aims to strengthen the security and resilience of the group's operations, networks, systems and customers worldwide.
«The centre will expand Vodafone's capacity to anticipate, detect and respond to cyber threats», as the group believes that «global threats require a global cybersecurity capability across its operations».
The new centre is based in Lisbon and «represents a long-term investment by the Vodafone Group», reinforcing «Portugal's role as a hub for talent and innovation in the field of cybersecurity».
The choice of Portugal, Vodafone adds, «recognises the high calibre of its professionals and the dynamism of the national technology ecosystem».
The centre will be part of a global team that already has hubs in the UK, Germany, Romania and India.
Initially, «the centre will employ around 40 specialists, with recruitment processes already underway and set to continue until the end of the year».
Applications can be submitted via the link https://careers.vodafone.com and are open to people with experience in areas such as cybersecurity, engineering, emerging technologies and digital transformation, as well as to internal staff as part of career development and reskilling programmes, according to the group.
«The new teams, based at Vodafone Portugal's headquarters, will work in close collaboration with specialists from various international markets within the Group, as part of a global organisation dedicated to cybersecurity,» the company states.
The GCC will include a wide range of expertise, from security strategy and architecture to incident prevention, detection and response, ensuring an integrated approach to the Group's digital protection.
Key areas of focus include the secure development of in-house and third-party solutions, risk management, infrastructure protection, and the continuous monitoring of and response to threats, with «a particular focus on emerging technologies», including solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI).
In addition to these functions, the GCC will incorporate cybersecurity operations, incident response, technology demonstration activities, customer engagement and collaboration with different areas of the Group.
«The creation of the GCC in Lisbon confirms the strategic importance of the Portuguese market to the Vodafone Group and recognises not only the specialist knowledge developed in recent years in this area by the Portuguese operation, but also the high calibre of cybersecurity talent produced by the country's universities,» said Luís Lopes, CEO of Vodafone Portugal, in a statement.
«This is a very significant step towards positioning Portugal and its talent on the global cybersecurity map and towards strengthening Vodafone's position as a leading employer,» he added.
For her part, Emma Smith, Vodafone's global CISO [Chief Information Security Officer], emphasises that cybersecurity «is fundamental to maintaining the trust» of customers.
