Lisbon, July 22, 2026 (Lusa) - The new Luís de Camões Airport, in the Portuguese capital, will be around 20 minutes from the centre of Lisbon by rail, according to the plan presented on Wednesday, which envisages the opening of a high-speed line and dedicated link to the airport in 2034.
The new station will be served by four lines and three platforms, with direct long-distance connections to various regions of the country, announced the secretary of state for infrastructure, Hugo Espírito Santo, during the session «Expansion and modernisation of the national airport system: connecting Portugal to the world», which took place at the Congress and Meetings Centre of the Belém Cultural Centre in Lisbon.
The details are part of the technical report on the new airport, submitted by Portugal's airports managing company, ANA – Aeroportos, to the Government last week, which plans to submit the Environmental Impact Assessment to the Government by the end of the month.
The official estimate suggests that 20 million passengers a year will travel to and from the airport via rail services.
«Luís de Camões Airport will be served by a high-speed rail link, with a direct shuttle service to the centre of Lisbon taking around 20 minutes, via the Third River Tagus Bridge,», explained the concessionaire.
The plan also provides for direct long-distance connections to various regions of the country and a reduction of around 30 minutes in journey times to the Algarve and the Alentejo.
During the presentation, the secretary of state for infrastructure highlighted that the project was on schedule.
«We are right on track with the initial plan,» he said, also emphasising the transparency in reporting on the various stages.
In terms of road infrastructure, 250 kilometres of new roads are planned, along with more than 50 kilometres of upgrades to the existing network.
Among the planned work are links connecting national roads 4, 10 and 119 to the airport, the link between the A33 and the A12 and A13, and the IC13 between the airport, Ponte de Sor and Alter do Chão.
The network is expected to handle an estimated daily traffic volume of 65,000 light vehicles and around 2,000 heavy goods vehicles.
The project also includes upgrading of the National Road 4, the widening of the EN118 to dual carriageway standard, and improvements to the EN119, with the aim of strengthening links between the municipalities on both banks of the Tagus.
The infrastructure is expected to open with a capacity for 56 million passengers per year, two runways and a terminal covering around 500,000 square metres.
