Lisbon, July 16, 20276 (Lusa) - The collection of solar panels for recycling rose from 213 tonnes in the first half of 2025 to 3,356 tonnes in the same period this year, due to the storms that hit the centre of the country, according to the Electrão system.
The collection of these panels has seen an exponential increase, mainly due to the storms that ravaged the centre of the country at the end of January and significantly impacted this type of equipment, according to a statement released.
The list of most commonly collected items also includes fridges, freezers and radiators, followed by small appliances such as toasters and irons, screens and televisions, IT and telecommunications equipment, and light bulbs.
In total, the Electrão system collected and sent for recycling more than 24,000 tonnes of used electrical equipment in the first half of this year, 19% more than in the first six months of 2025.
Among the most recycled electrical equipment in the first half of this year, by weight, are large household appliances such as washing machines and tumble dryers.
In addition to recycling, Electrão promotes the reuse of collected equipment wherever possible.
This network currently has 18,000 collection points nationwide.
Electrão also offers a door-to-door collection service for large household appliances, ensuring that the equipment will be sent for recycling in 14 municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and the Western region: Almada, Amadora, Cascais, Lisbon, Loures, Mafra, Moita, Odivelas, Oeiras, Palmela, Seixal, Sintra, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Torres Vedras.
