Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Bureaucracy has its days numbered - president

Maputo, July 14, 2026 (Lusa) - Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo told Lusa that the digitisation of public services, one of the key priorities of his first year and a half in office, will soon make bureaucracy in the country a thing of the past.

“Our aim in digitising public services is to ensure the speed of processes and provide efficient support to businesses and citizens as a whole,” explained Daniel Chapo, who is leaving for Lisbon on Tuesday for a four-day official visit, in an interview with Lusa.

In Portugal, Daniel Chapo will take part on Wednesday in the EurAfrican Forum in Cascais, organised by the Portuguese Diaspora Council, alongside the Portuguese President, António José Seguro.

Daniel Chapo was sworn in on 15 January as the fifth president of Mozambique, at which time he set out his governance priorities, focusing on digitalisation, integrity in public life, and the training and capacity-building of state officials.

“Another extremely important aspect to highlight regarding digitalisation is the issue of reducing bureaucracy, which will lead to greater speed and efficiency in the provision of public services by the state; however, one of the key focuses of digitalisation is the fight against corruption,” he emphasised.

“Corruption undermines the development of any country in the world, and we have been working hard to combat it; digitalisation is one of the ways we are doing this. Because with digitalisation, fewer people come into direct contact with one another. And when there is no direct contact between people, there is generally scope to reduce the sources of corruption within our country,” he added.

This, the Head of State emphasised, “is one of the objectives” to ensure that Mozambique has “a good business environment” and can “attract more investment, both domestic and foreign”.

With the digital transition well underway and with a dedicated ministry within Mozambique’s government, the Mozambican head of state aims to attract the establishment of data centres in Mozambique, including from Portugal.

“The key is energy; Mozambique has a reliable energy supply. We could build a sort of mini Silicon Valley here in Mozambique, and we believe that investing in digitalisation and the digital economy is extremely important for our country’s development,” he said.
