Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Free public transport for Porto residents starts Friday

Porto, July 10, 2026 (Lusa) - Public transport for residents of Porto will be free from Friday for holders of the Porto municipal card, the mayor, Pedro Duarte, announced today.

“From today, public transport is free in the city of Porto for holders of the Porto card,” said Pedro Duarte today at a ceremony held in the square in front of Trindade metro station.

This was one of the key measures in the election manifesto of the then candidate.

In his speech, Pedro Duarte explained that those who already have the free travel pass up to the age of 23 “can simply keep using it”, while those with the municipal card can visit an Andante or Payshop outlet to update it, “a process that takes seconds”.

Residents who wish to obtain the Porto municipal card can apply online or in person at the Residents’ Office.

The free travel allowance will be topped up annually, the mayor added.
