Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: EU partnership 'extremely high' - outgoing ambassador

Maputo, July 9, 2026 (Lusa) - The outgoing European Union (EU) Ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore, said on Thursday that the partnership between Brussels and Maputo had reached an “extremely high level”, highlighting progress in the fight against terrorism, political dialogue and economic cooperation.

The diplomat was speaking in Maputo following a meeting with the president of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, as part of the conclusion of his term of office in the country, during which he presented an overview of bilateral cooperation, noting that he had spent the last four years leading EU diplomacy in Mozambique, which had been marked by “remarkable results” in the political, economic and cultural spheres.

“It was also an opportunity to highlight the significant results achieved in strengthening the strategic partnership between the European Union and Mozambique,” said Antonino Maggiore.

He stated that the strengthening of relations between Mozambique and the EU stemmed from a political decision by both parties, highlighting as priorities the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado, inclusive national dialogue on reforms and support for economic development.

The ambassador also emphasised the EU military mission's role in training the Mozambican Armed Forces and supplying equipment as key achievements during his tenure in Mozambique.

“We confirmed our support in the fight against terrorism, in the inclusive national dialogue for reforms, as well as in humanitarian aid following the challenges Mozambique has faced this year, and also clearly in the economic sphere,” Antonino Maggiore said.

He also highlighted the second Mozambique–European Union Business Forum (Global Gateway), held in June, as a milestone in deepening economic relations between the two partners. The event was attended by President Daniel Chapo and more than 800 European and Mozambican companies, resulting in financing agreements worth €118 million for sectors such as energy, education and the digital transition.

According to Maggiore, cooperation between Mozambique and the EU represents a “360-degree” strategic partnership, encompassing political, economic, social and cultural areas, underpinned by the commitment of European institutions and Mozambican authorities.

“I think I can say that I am ending my term of office with great satisfaction, because we have managed to reach an extremely high level of bilateral partnership between the European Union and Mozambique,” said the ambassador, who is leaving Maputo after four years of diplomatic service.

The European Union has been one of Mozambique’s main international partners in supporting security, economic development and institutional strengthening.
