Praia, July 2, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal consolidated its position as the main country of origin for Cabo Verde’s imports of goods in the first quarter of 2026, with 12,597.3 million escudos (€114.2 million), accounting for almost half of total imports.
According to data from the Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV), accessed on Thursday by Lusa, imports from Portugal rose by 12.1% compared with the first quarter of 2025.
The eurozone supplied 17,270.6 million escudos (€156.6 million) worth of goods, accounting for 68.1% of imports by geographical origin, with a year-on-year increase of 4.7%.
Spain was the second-largest source of imports, with 2,843.5 million escudos (€25.7 million), up 32.6% on the same period last year.
Imports from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) rose by 43.1% to 1,326.5 million escudos (€12 million), driven mainly by Togo, which rose from 476.1 to 808.8 million escudos (from €4.3 to €7.3 million).
Imports from Brazil fell by 21.5% to 1,202.7 million escudos (€10.9 million), whilst those from the United States fell by 53.6% to 211.6 million escudos (€1.9 million).
Imports of goods by Cabo Verde fell by 0.4% in the first quarter of 2026 year-on-year, to 25,356.7 million escudos (€230 million), with the decline in fuels offsetting increases in intermediate and capital goods.
