Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Motorway operator holds worker safety awareness event

Lisbon, June 26, 2026 (Lusa) - Brisa Autoestradas will hold an awareness-raising event on the safety of professionals who work on motorways every day on Wednesday, as part of a European safety campaign.

Drivers can find out, between 08:00 and 16:00 on Wednesday, at a service station on the A1 in Pombal, the equipment used by Brisa staff, particularly for patrolling, signalling and road repairs, including roadside assistance vans, trailers fitted with message boards and portable crash barriers.

The aim of this equipment display, as Teresa Nobre, Director of Health and Safety at the Brisa Group, explained to Lusa, is for drivers to recognise the equipment, understand what the workers are doing and adopt defensive driving when passing through these roadworks, protecting themselves, the workers and other road users.

“Slow down, pay extra attention and, above all, drive within the speed limits set for that location, bearing in mind that there are workers on the road working to ensure everyone’s safety,” she said.

Except for two fatal accidents involving pedestrians, including that of a road maintenance worker (Nuno Santos, aged 43) on the A6 motorway, near Évora, in June 2021, caused by the official car in which Portugal's minister for Internal Affairs, Eduardo Cabrita, was travelling, Brisa has not recorded any further fatal incidents involving staff working on the motorways.

This awareness campaign on worker safety on motorways, the third organised by Brisa, is promoted by the European Professional Association of Road Infrastructure Operators (ASECAP) in several European countries, but this year it includes a section dedicated to the health and well-being of professional drivers.
