Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Supervision of prediction markets being strengthened

Lisbon, June 23, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal has signed a declaration with several other countries to strengthen the supervision of prediction markets, where players bet, for example, on future geopolitical or sporting events, according to Turismo de Portugal (TP).

In response to Lusa, TP stated that “the regulatory bodies for online gambling and betting have signed a joint declaration regarding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being publicised nationally by each of the signatory regulators”.

This statement was signed by the regulatory bodies of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

According to TP, the declaration “focuses on prediction market platforms, which have become very popular in recent years, particularly amongst young adults, and which, due to the visibility they have achieved and their accessibility and viral nature, pose a risk of addiction to players”.

Furthermore, according to the authority, “many of them do not comply with the local legislation of each of these countries”.

For this reason, the regulators decided to promote the signing of this declaration and thereby make “a commitment for the duration of the championship and beyond”, to “develop mechanisms for cooperation amongst themselves, in particular through the sharing of information, experiences and best practice, to protect players”.
