Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Hyperion Renewables inks solar, wind power purchase deal with Repsol

Estremoz, Evora, Portugal, June 22, 2026 (Lusa) - The renewable energy to be generated at a solar photovoltaic plant and a wind farm operated by Portugal's Hyperion Renewables in the Alentejo region will be sold to the energy company Repsol, with supply due to begin in 2028, it was announced on Monday.

In a statement, Hyperion Renewables, the developer of the two projects, revealed that it had signed with Repsol “a renewable energy purchase and sale agreement combining solar and wind power generation”.

“The contract reinforces both companies’ commitment to long-term energy solutions capable of supporting the decarbonisation of economic activity and accelerating the energy transition,” it emphasised.

According to the developer, the energy to be supplied to Repsol will be generated at the Cavaleira Photovoltaic Plant in Estremoz, in the region of Évora, and at the Nortada Wind Farm in Sousel, in the region of Portalegre, which is currently under construction.

The projects are complementary, as the plan is to integrate wind power generation with the solar plant and the battery storage system – also under construction – into a single grid connection point, the company highlighted when announcing the start of construction of the wind farm.

Contacted today by the Lusa news agency, a source at Hyperion Renewables stated that the photovoltaic solar power plant and wind farm projects involve a total investment of around €78.6 million.

The photovoltaic solar power plant represented an investment of around €35 million, whilst the estimated investment in the Sousel wind farm amounts to around €43.6 million, the same source explained.

The wind farm, which is due to be completed in 2027, will have seven turbines, with a total installed capacity of 31.5 megawatts (MW), whilst the solar photovoltaic plant, which is already operational, has an installed capacity of 52 MW.

Hyperion Renewables stated that the supply of renewable energy to Repsol will begin in 2028 and continue for 10 years, estimating that the volume to be supplied will correspond to the annual consumption of “approximately 40,000 homes”.

“In total, the two assets are expected to supply Repsol with around 140,000 MWh [megawatt-hours] of renewable energy per year, preventing the annual emission of more than 23,000 tonnes of CO2 [carbon dioxide],” it emphasised.

Quoted in the press release, the CEO of Hyperion Renewables, Aytea Alvarez Amandi, stated that the agreement with Repsol “marks an important milestone” for the renewable energy project developer.

“By structuring a PPA [Power Purchase Agreement] that combines solar and wind power generation, we are taking a concrete step towards creating renewable solutions that are more efficient, predictable and aligned with companies’ decarbonisation needs,” she emphasised.

Noting that “Europe is accelerating its carbon neutrality targets”, Aytea Alvarez Amandi considered that “hybrid projects will play an increasingly important role in the energy transition, due to their ability to optimise resources, enhance the complementarity of generation and offer greater stability to consumers”.

Founded in 2006, Hyperion Renewables has “more than 300 MW of assets in operation or currently under construction”.
