Lisbon, June 22, 2026 (Lusa) - Statistics Portugal (INE) announced on Monday that it would review all ‘per capita’ indicators, such as Gross Domestic Product, employment and issues relating to the justice system, education and health.
“The revision of the annual estimates of the resident population for the years 2021 to 2024 has an impact on various INE statistical operations, notably on the calibration (extrapolation) of the results of sample inquiries, in particular the Labour Force Inquiry”, with an impact on the “results of the National Accounts”, which “will have to be reassessed”, INE said which has presented a timetable for the release of new data in a methodological note accompanying the publication of the results on residents in the country.
In the national accounts, the assessment of economic activity includes a component that is estimated “taking into account the employed population from the Labour Force Inquiry”, INE said; this figure is expected to change, as the percentage of unemployed people is lower, given that the total population has been revised upwards over recent years.
Furthermore, “the revision of the population entails updating the various ‘per inhabitant’ or ‘per capita’ indicators, which use the resident population in the denominator and are made available by INE on the Official Statistics Portal”; consequently, most of these revisions will be published in the coming months.
As for the revision of GDP and GDP ‘per capita’ – which will have an impact on the figures submitted by Portugal to European institutions, and which have served as the basis for the allocation of funds or project applications – this can only be carried out following the revision of the national accounts for 2021 to 2026, in March 2027.
The “Employment Inquiry estimates (monthly, quarterly, annual, regular and ad hoc modules) for 2021 to 2026” will be published in “February 2027”, and only after that will it be possible to finalise the national accounts.
Later this month, updated data on culture, sport and justice will be published.
Indicators with geographical breakdowns of the population will be released in July, as will data on social protection, the labour market, hospitals and workplace accidents, and non-tertiary education, whilst data on tertiary education and economic statistics will be published in September.
The publication of revised data on causes of death is scheduled for December.
