NNA - Novo Nordisk, in collaboration with the Lebanese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Lipids (LSEDL), convened a national dialogue on weight management in Beirut, bringing together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and experts to promote a more informed and compassionate approach to obesity.
Moderated by LSEDL Vice President Dr. Maya Barake, the event highlighted the growing prevalence of obesity in Lebanon and emphasized that body weight is influenced by a complex interplay of biological, hormonal, genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. LSEDL President Dr. Hajar Ballout stressed the importance of early medical guidance and personalized care plans to support long-term health and well-being.
Participants underscored the impact of stigma on individuals living with obesity. Dr. Rajaa Makki, President of the Lebanese Order of Psychologists, and Dr. Nathalie Yaghi, Vice President of the Lebanese Order of Dietitians, emphasized that stigma and unrealistic expectations remain major barriers to seeking care and achieving sustainable health outcomes. They called for greater empathy, realistic goal-setting, and continuous support throughout the care journey.
Experts also highlighted the importance of comprehensive treatment approaches tailored to individual needs, including lifestyle modifications and, where appropriate, additional medical interventions under specialist supervision.
Recognizing obesity as a broader public health challenge, representatives of the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education joined the discussion, reaffirming their commitment to prevention through school-based initiatives, healthier communities, and improved access to support services. Participants agreed that coordinated action across institutions is essential to making healthier choices more accessible and fostering long-term positive outcomes.
The dialogue concluded with a shared message that obesity should be addressed through science, support, and collaboration, and that no individual should face the challenge alone.
