Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Trains already hit by tomorrow's general strike

Lisbon, June 2, 2026 (Lusa) - Wednesday's general strike has already led to the cancellation of 153 CP trains between midnight and 4 pm on Tuesday, representing 19.3% of the 791 scheduled trains, the company said.

According to data from CP - Comboios de Portugal, 17 of the 47 scheduled long-distance trains were cancelled, whilst 67 of the 188 scheduled regional trains were cancelled.

On Lisbon’s urban network, two of the 363 scheduled trains were cancelled, whilst in Porto, 63 of the 172 scheduled trains were cancelled.

In Coimbra, 21 trains were scheduled to run, of which four were cancelled.

Today, between 00:00 and 16:00, the minimum service requirement was 25 trains, all of which ran.

On Saturday, CP warned of possible disruption to train services between today and Thursday due to the general strike on 3 June, and published the minimum services planned for urban, regional and long-distance trains.

"Due to a strike called by several trade unions on 3 June, the day of the general strike, disruptions to train services are expected, with possible impacts also on the day before and the day after,” warned the rail operator in a notice published on its website.

CP also noted that minimum service levels have been established for train operations, which can be consulted on its website, for the Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, Regional and InterRegional, and Porto, Coimbra, and Lisbon Urban services.

For customers who already have tickets for travel on Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, International, InterRegional, and Regional services, CP will offer a full refund or a free change to another train of the same category and class.

According to the operator, refunds or exchanges can be made online for tickets purchased via this channel and on the CP app, up to 15 minutes before the train’s departure from the customer’s station of origin.

Refunds can be requested at ticket offices, either before or after the date of travel, and up to 10 days after the end of the strike; they may also be requested via the online form “Refund for Delay or Cancellation”, subject to longer response times.

The CGTP has issued a notice of a general strike for 3 June against changes to the labour law, after negotiations with the Government ended without agreement.

The government approved the draft bill to revise the labour law in the cabinet, which will be debated in parliament, a week after Luís Montenegro’s executive declared negotiations on changes to labour legislation concluded without agreement in the Social Dialogue.

Wednesday’s strike is expected to see widespread participation, with several trade unions from various sectors having already announced their involvement, notably the civil service (particularly in health and education), transport, aviation and retail, amongst others.
