HINA - Croatia-Serbia project targets restoration of Danube floodplain forests

ZAGREB, 1 Jun (Hina) - The “Siga2Kazuk” project, valued at more than €900,000, aims to restore and protect endangered floodplain forests along the Danube, with a particular focus on the Siga area in Croatia, which was heavily damaged during storms in 2020, participants said at the project’s launch conference.

The project is being implemented under the Interreg IPA Croatia-Serbia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2021-2027.

The lead partner is Serbian public forestry company Vojvodinašume, while Croatia’s Hrvatske šume is a project partner.

Planned activities include the establishment of pilot areas, demonstration forest restoration projects, the procurement of modern equipment, wildlife protection measures, data collection and the development of a joint digital platform for monitoring and protecting forest ecosystems.

Project participants highlighted the importance of restoring natural areas for the future of the environment and the sustainable management of natural resources.

The project is expected to strengthen cross-border capacities for the restoration and protection of forest ecosystems, train experts in the use of advanced remote sensing technologies and develop a sustainable model for restoring floodplain forests in the cross-border Danube region.
