Macau, China, May 8, 2026 (Lusa) – Casino operator Wynn Macau announced on Friday operating profits of $279.4 million (€238.2 million) for the first quarter, representing a 10.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Wynn's earnings rose following a 14.2% growth in revenue from its two Macau properties between January and March, totalling $989.2 million (€843.2 million), according to a company statement.
Gambling at the Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace casinos accounted for most of the company's turnover in 2025, generating $841.6 million (€717.5 million) in revenue, a 16.9% rise.
"In Macau, we saw a significant increase in gambling volume over the previous year, along with a healthy market share," said Craig Billings, CEO of the parent company Wynn Resorts.
The mass market remained the operator's primary segment by far, representing revenues of $811.9 million (€692 million), up 14.2% from the first quarter.
In the VIP gambling segment, bets from high rollers fell by 9.9% across Wynn Macau’s two casinos. Conversely, revenues increased 13.5% to $136.5 million (€116.4 million).
This occurred despite the Wynn Macau casino retaining only 0.39% of VIP bets, while casinos in Macau typically average a 3% win rate in this segment.
In 2019, VIP baccarat represented 46.2% of total casino revenues in Macau. By 2025, this segment’s share had dropped to 27.5%, although absolute revenues rose 24.1%.
High-stakes gambling suffered after authorities detained the leader of the world's largest VIP gambling promoter in November 2021.
Alvin Chau Cheok Wa, former executive director of Suncity, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in January 2023. The case led to a sharp decline in the number of gambling promoter licences issued in Macau, falling from 85 to 18.
Alongside Wynn, five other gambling concessionaires, MGM, Galaxy, Venetian, Melco, and SJM, operate in Macau, the global gambling capital and the only location in China where casino gambling remains legal.
Billings announced an investment of at least $900 million (€767 million) to build a new 432-suite hotel at the Wynn Macau property during a conference call with analysts.
The executive, quoted by the news portal GGRAsia, said that the company awaits authorisation from the local government. Construction should begin in the second half of 2026 and take two and a half years to complete.
Wynn Resorts operates in the Chinese semi-autonomous region of Macau, as well as in the US and the UK. The company is currently building the Wynn Al Marjan casino in the United Arab Emirates.
He acknowledged a "slight delay" in the Ras Al Khaimah project due to the conflict in the Middle East, but guaranteed the opening remains scheduled for 2027.
The US and Israel launched a military offensive against Iran on 28 February. Iran retaliated with attacks against Israel, US bases, and civilian infrastructure in regional countries, including the United Arab Emirates.
"While we have faced logistics and shipping challenges in the region, deliveries have largely continued, and we are rerouting shipments and sourcing alternative materials," he said.
Construction of the Wynn Al Marjan, a $5.1 billion (€4.35 billion) investment, continues "with over 22,000 workers on site," he said.
