Matosinhos, Portugal, May 6, 2026 (Lusa) – Galp (Portuguese multinational energy corporation) confirmed to Lusa that it detected an "occurrence at a decommissioned infrastructure of the former Matosinhos refinery" near Porto, saying that the situation is "in the mitigation phase, with favourable progress" and poses no risk to public health.
"Galp informs that the occurrence detected in a decommissioned infrastructure of the former Matosinhos refinery is in the mitigation phase, with favourable progress. Regular containment and cleaning operations remain on the ground," it said in a written response to Lusa.
Lusa questioned the energy company regarding a pollutant discharge into a watercourse reported in early April. Galp confirmed it is conducting "daily monitoring in coordination with the authorities."
"Based on the available technical information, there is no risk to public health," it said.
Matosinhos Mayor Luísa Salgueiro told Lusa that she reported what was "clearly a discharge originating from the facilities of the former refinery" to the authorities. She said that the Portuguese Environment Agency "is processing the penalties against Galp."
"Responsibilities are being demanded due to this non-compliance," she said.
On 4 April, the Jornal de Notícias reported that pollutant discharges from the former refinery affected a watercourse in Leça da Palmeira, staining the stream.
