Italy's annual inflation rate shot up to 2.8% in April 2026, compared to 1.7% in March, amid the energy-price shock linked to the Iran war, according to a preliminary estimate released by Istat on Thursday.
    The national statistics agency said its consumer price index was up 1.2% in month-on-month terms.
    "The acceleration of inflation was mainly due to the dynamics of prices of non-regulated energy products (from -2.0% to +9.9%), of regulated energy products (from -1.6% to +5.7%) and of unprocessed food (from +4.7% to +6.0%)," Istat said.
