Dili, April 30, 2026 (Lusa) - Timor-Leste and Brunei Darussalam are set to strengthen cooperation in the energy and health sectors with the signing of two memoranda of understanding, as part of the Timor-Leste prime minister’s visit to Brunei starting on Sunday.
According to a statement from the cabinet meeting held in Dili on Thursday, the memorandum of understanding to be signed next week in the energy sector establishes a framework for knowledge sharing and technical capacity building, promoting investment opportunities, particularly in the areas of oil and gas.
“The planned cooperation includes training initiatives, joint research in exploration, development and production areas, and the exchange of best practices in energy policy matters,” the statement said.
In terms of healthcare, the memorandum of understanding aims to strengthen health services and the development of the sector.
"Among the main areas of cooperation are healthcare services, disease prevention and control, human resources development and the strengthening of hospital infrastructure," the statement said.
Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão, is making an official visit to Brunei between Sunday and Tuesday, before travelling on to Cebu in the Philippines for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, taking place on 8 and 9 May.
