Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Rail passenger operator profit more than doubles to €4.8 M in 2025

Lisbon, April 29, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's state-owned rail passenger operator, Comboios de Portugal (CP), reached €4.8 million in profits in 2025, representing a 166% increase compared to 2024 results, the infrastructure ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The ministry said the railway company generated €3 million more in 2025 than in 2024. The company transported a record 208 million passengers in 2025, a 10% increase from 2024. The ministry added that the green rail pass (a low-cost monthly pass for regional travel) contributed significantly to this growth in the regional sector.

"The 2025 financial statements reflect a consolidation of the company's financial health, preparing it for future challenges," the ministry said.

Infrastructure and Housing Minister Miguel Pinto Luz highlighted CP's positive results. He said they "give a sign of confidence about the company's future as a public operator."

Pinto Luz also thanked employees, stressing the need to invest in railways, combat the lack of affordable or accessible public transport and fund decarbonised transport solutions.
