Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: State dividend revenue dropped almost 37% in 2025

Maputo, 20 Apr 2026 (Lusa) – Mozambique's state revenue from dividends fell 36.7% in 2025 to 8.144 billion meticais (€108 million), according to Ministry of Finance data.

Provisional budget execution data from January to December shows that Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) guaranteed 68% of these dividends. The company operates one of Africa's largest hydroelectricity dams in Tete province, in the centre of the country.

Total dividends paid by companies to the state accounted for 3.7% of all government revenue in 2024, approximately 12.871 billion meticais (€170.6 million), but this share dropped to 2.3% last year.

Accounting for 12.3% of total dividends paid to the state in 2025, next comes the National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH), which paid 1,000 million meticais (€13.2 million), followed by the Mozambican Hydrocarbons Company and the Mozambican-Zimbabwean Pipeline Company (CMPMZ), each accounting for 4.6%, corresponding to around 370 million meticais (€4.9 million).

HCB, which is majority-owned by the Mozambican state and includes a 7.5% stake held by Portugal’s electricity and gas network manager, Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), also led in concession payments. It paid nearly 2.291 billion meticais (€31.1 million), equivalent to 48.9% of the total received by the state in 2025.

Overall revenue from these concessions fell 22.9% in 2025 compared to the previous year, totalling 3.882 billion meticais (€51.5 million), according to the Ministry of Finance.

Following HCB, the concession for the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) contributed 609.1 million meticais (€8.1 million), marking a 52.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
