Ministers huddled with Premier Giorgia Meloni Wednesday after extreme weather 'reawakened" one of Europe's largest sinkholes and caused a landslide cutting Italy in two in the southern region of Molise.
The landslide at Petacciato has cut off road and rail links along the southern Adriatic coast.
Meloni is closely monitoring the difficult situation created by the landslide in Molise, which has blocked the A14 motorway, the State Road 16, and the Adriatic railway line.
Sources at Palazzo Chigi reported that the prime minister—who last night telephoned the president of the Molise Regional Council, Francesco Roberti—held a videoconference meeting today.
The meeting was attended by the ministers of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and Defense, Guido Crosetto; the head of the Department of Civil Protection, Fabio Ciciliano; and Cabinet Secretary Alfredo Mantovano.
Technical inspections of the Petacciato landslide are underway, necessary to gather information and evaluate interventions aimed at restoring road access.
Authorities said Tuesday night that it would take weeks or months to restore transport links in the area.
