Lisbon, April 6, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's meteorological institute (IPMA) forecasts a prolonged period of rain across the mainland starting Monday, with thunderstorms and falling temperatures due to a low-pressure area.
The change follows days of clear skies and maximum temperatures "well above what is normal for the time of year," according to an IPMA statement on Monday. The depression will centre west of the mainland, move south, and remain between Madeira and mainland Portugal during the week.
Cloud cover will increase, and rain will return on Monday, starting on the southern coast and gradually spreading northwards and inland. Heavier and more frequent rain, possibly with thunderstorms, is expected on Tuesday.
South winds will prevail, becoming stronger in the highlands, with gusts up to 80 km/h on Tuesday.
Maximum temperatures will drop sharply, falling by up to 10ºC in some places. Most of the country will see maximum temperatures below 20ºC.
Minimum temperatures will drop slightly, ranging from eight to 12 degrees Celsius.
IPMA forecasts dust on Monday, likely moving east from Tuesday afternoon. This dust is carried by the depression, which "will affect forecasts for the coming days," creating a situation with "some associated uncertainty."
The institute said waves on the west coast will increase on Wednesday, with north-west waves between four and five metres.
