Dili, April 2, 2026 (Lusa) — Timor-Leste prime minister, Xanana Gusmão, on Thursday announced the possibility of cutting off electricity during the night if the conflict in the Middle East continues.
“I have informed the president that, should the war situation in the Middle East become very difficult, the government will announce that electricity will be available until 11.00 pm and will be restored at 5.00 am, so that we can save energy,” said Xanana Gusmão.
On Wednesday, the government approved a $168.8 million (€135.5 million) expenditure to secure fuel supplies until the end of 2026, due to the conflict in the Middle East.
According to the cabinet meeting statement, the Petroleum and Mineral Resources minister, Francisco Monteiro, had been authorised to initiate urgent direct procurement for 80 million litres of diesel, worth $168.8 million.
“This decision aims to ensure the creation of a security reserve sufficient to last until the end of the year, considering the possibility of fuel shortages due to the prolonged conflict in the Middle East”, the statement said.
The prime minister called on citizens and public institutions to reduce vehicle use, suggesting that people should walk over the next weekend to conserve fuel.
