Lusa - Business News - Portugal: €350M intervention to preserve ancient Roman city walls

Condeixa-a-Nova, Portugal, March 31, 2026 (Lusa) – The Municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova has announced a public tender to safeguard the far western section of the city walls within the Conimbriga archaeological site, expected to cost around €350 million, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

Vítor Dias, the Director of the Conímbriga National Museum, told Lusa that the tender hoped to safeguard and consolidate that sector of the wall.

The official notice published in the ‘Diário da República’ (official gazette) said on Monday that the works should take about five months.

According to Dias, the tender formed part of a broader PRR strategy aimed at presenting projects with shorter timelines, a shift that followed a previous museum renovation tender that failed to attract any bidders.

The current intervention was designed to restore safety to a section of the wall that was currently toppled and had never undergone formal conservation, paving the way for future developments, including the stabilisation of collapsed structures, the creation of a cultural viewpoint, to show that Conímbriga was much more than just a museum, and future plans for digital engagement and museum-grade displays, he said, further recalling that the deadline for submitting proposals ends 10 April.

Additionally, Dias told Lusa that three other PRR-funded projects were further advanced in the tendering process, specifically focusing on conservation, the restoration of the Early Empire wall in Sector F near the Amphitheatre, and technological upgrades to implement site-wide Wi-Fi.

Dias concluded by expressing his hope that they would successfully execute all the projects, adding that they were highly expectant regarding the results.
