Lisbon, March 18, 2026 (Lusa) — Renewable energy accounted for 79.0% of the electricity produced in mainland Portugal in the first two months of the year, the third-best record in Europe for renewable incorporation, the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (Apren) said on Wednesday.
Apren's latest renewable electricity bulletin shows that 77.3% of the electricity produced in mainland Portugal between 1 and 28 February came from renewable sources, totalling 4,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) out of a total of 5,175 GWh produced in that period.
Portugal was the country with the third-highest renewable incorporation in electricity generation, with this performance, and considering the total for January and February (79.0%), behind Norway (96.2%) and Denmark (90.7%).
Hydropower was the main source of electricity production in February, according to Apren, accounting for 37.2% of total output, followed by wind power (31.3%) and solar photovoltaic (5.2%).
National electricity production increased by 20.1% compared to February 2025, mainly due to a 716 GWh increase in wind production.
The average price on the Iberian Electricity Market (Mibel) in Portugal was €5.1 per megawatt-hour (€/MWh) in the second month of the year, while the total for January and February was €42.4/MWh, a 58.5% decrease compared to the same period last year.
"The contribution of the renewable sector was also reflected in significant environmental savings," the association said, noting that the country avoided spending €48.8 million on natural gas imports, €101 million on electricity imports and €44 million on the purchase of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission licences in February alone.
Renewable capacity accounted for around 81% of total installed capacity in Portugal at the end of January 2026.
