(Refiles, with photos) A bust of Christ the Saviour that has been housed for centuries at Rome's Saint Agnes Outside the Walls basilica has been attributed to Michelangelo.
The sculpture had been anonymous up to now.
The new attribution was presented at a press conference at the basilica on Wednesday by researcher Valentina Salerno, the author of new studies on the work, and by the Canons Regular of the Lateran congregation, which manages the church.
It is based on findings from documents including wills, correspondence, diaries, travel books, reports, notarial inventories, and confraternity records from 1564 to the present day.
