Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Public tender for port expansion funded by EU

Praia, Feb. 27, 2026 (Lusa) - Cabo Verde will launch international tenders on Saturday and Sunday for the expansion of the ports on the islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente, in an investment supported by the European Union (EU), the archipelago's government announced on Friday.

The port on the island of São Vicente (Porto Grande) will benefit from the extension of the container quays, the expansion of the respective park, a new bulk cargo dock, and improvements to fish transhipment.

Porto Grande hosts spaces dedicated to the export of tuna and mackerel preparations, among other fish, with Europe (particularly Spain) being the main destination.

The international public tender, officially scheduled to be launched on Saturday in São Vicente, includes the selection of a contractor for design, engineering, and construction.

The port on the island of Santo Antão (Porto Novo), 15 kilometres away, will benefit from an extension of the quay and will now be able to accommodate larger ships.

The tender follows the same model, and the official launch is scheduled for Sunday on the island - both ceremonies will be attended by Cabo Verde's prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.

In September 2024, Cabo Verde and the EU signed the largest financial package ever from Brussels to support the archipelago, currently amounting to €378 million, earmarked for energy, ports, and digital infrastructure.
