Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Govt aid insignificant for calamity we face from floods - local mayor

Alcacer do Sal, Setubal, Portugal, Feb. 11, 2026 (Lusa) - The mayor of Alcacer do Sal, in the Portuguese region of Setubal, Clarisse Campos, on Wednesday called on the State to allocate "a considerable sum," which she did not specify, to repair the infrastructure damaged by flooding in this district.

"We are going to demand that the State come to the area and start assessing what has been destroyed in terms of roads, accesses and municipal buildings, as well as businesses, commercial spaces and family homes," the mayor told the Lusa news agency.

Clarisse Campos considered that, in view of the disaster that struck Alcácer do Sal, it will be necessary to allocate "a considerable amount of money" to the district, which she did not specify, to rehabilitate the damaged infrastructure and equipment.

"The support being announced [by the Government] is completely insignificant for the calamity and tragedy we are facing in the district," she stressed, insisting that "a lot of money will be needed to rehabilitate everything".

According to the local authority mayor, in addition to the damage caused by the floods to businesses, commercial premises and homes, the local council itself has also suffered damage to the municipal library, the technical services building and roads.

The mayor highlighted the "enormous wave of solidarity" that has been generated around the district, involving teams of volunteers and military personnel, among others, in the clean-up work and the allocation of cash donations.

For donations, a solidarity account has been created by the local football club, Atlético Clube Alcacerense, with the endorsement and institutional support of the local authority, with a view to raising funds to support those who lost their possessions in the floods of recent weeks.

Donations can be made to the account with IBAN (International Bank Account Number) PT50004560204041220854549.

According to Clarisse Campos, the initiative includes the creation of regulations and the establishment of a task force, with specialists in the legal, accounting, architecture and engineering fields, which will monitor the allocation of donations.

"Cash donations are important because the funding that the State has already announced is clearly insufficient to rehabilitate everything that has been destroyed," she stressed.

Despite the reduction in the water level flow of the River Sado in recent days, Avenida dos Aviadores was flooded again this morning due to the rise in water levels caused by the high tide period, which coincided with the discharge of the upstream dams.

Even so, Alcácer do Sal is trying to return to normality little by little, with schools reopening on Monday and a temporary pharmacy scheduled to open this afternoon.

Fifteen people have died in Portugal since 28 January as a result of the Kristin, Leonardo and Marta storms, which also left many hundreds injured and homeless.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cutting of power, water and communications, floods and extreme rainfall are the main material consequences of the storms.

The Central, Lisbon and Tagus Valley and Alentejo regions are the most affected.

The Government has extended the state of emergency until Sunday for 68 districts and announced support measures worth up to €2.5 billion.
