Lusa - Business News - Angola: Unicargas expands to DRCongo, Zambia

Luanda, April 23,2024(Lusa) - Angola's Unicargas is expanding its business to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo) and Zambia and expects to triple its revenues from the current 15 to 45 billion kwanzas over the next few years.
The statements were made by Joaquim Piedade, coordinator of the management committee of the publicly-owned company that operates in cargo transport and as a port and airport terminal operator, on the sidelines of the signing ceremony for an agreement with the Abu Dhabi Ports group.
The agreement aims to create a consortium to operate the multipurpose terminal in Luanda for a period of 20 years, extendable for a further ten, with an investment totalling $410 million (383€ million), providing for the modernisation of port infrastructures and operations in the port, logistics and air segments.
The head of Unicargas said that the United Arab Emirates group's investments will contribute "to turning Angola into a logistics hub for the region" and said that they will continue with a memorandum of understanding with Secil Marítima, which provides for the joint operation of the Catumbela Air Cargo Terminal (Benguela), to boost the air cargo domain of the Lobito Corridor.
"As a result of these investments, we're going to expand our business to the region," he said, emphasising the "great attention" given to landlocked countries such as DRCongo and Zambia, where Unicargas is going to expand its business to sell products to the region.
"Today we distribute at national level, but we want to take and bring goods from the countries on our border, such as DRCongo and Zambia," said Joaquim Piedade, estimating to start this activity in August.
Last year, Unicargas achieved a turnover of 15 billion kwanzas (€18 million) which Joaquim Piedade hopes to triple (€54 million) in the coming years.
The manager expects the first year of the partnership with AD Ports to be "intense" in terms of investments in port infrastructure, benefiting what is Unicargas' largest business segment.
Currently, the company operates only 10a portion of the Porto of Luanda due to its lack of depth, which limits the capacity of ships calling at the terminal currently managed by Unicargas.
"We're going to have a different reality [after the next 18 months]," as the current nine-metre draft will be increased to 16 metres, allowing us to receive larger ships.
"Today, we have the capacity to operate ships of 1,000 TEUs [20-foot containers]; with this transformation, we'll have the capacity to operate ships of 9,000 TEUs," Joaquim Piedade explained.
