Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Azores Socialists demand financial details of agreement with Ryanair

Ponta Delgada, Portugal, April 23,2024 (Lusa) - The PS/Azores said on Tuesday it was concerned about the lack of flights between Ponta Delgada and Nuremberg, Germany, and demanded to know the "financial details of the agreement" between the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) and the airline Ryanair.
"The lack of available flights between Nuremberg and Ponta Delgada on the Ryanair portal raises serious concerns about the cancellation of the operation scheduled for 2024," said Carlos Silva, a socialist member of the Azorean parliament, quoted in a statement.
The PS/Açores argues that, given the "negotiations between the Regional Government and Ryanair, it is necessary to clarify whether there have been any setbacks or changes of plans on the part of the low-cost airline".
The Socialists have requested "urgent clarification" from the Azorean government in a letter to the Legislative Assembly.
"The members of the PS/Azores parliamentary group are requesting urgent clarification from the Regional Government of the Azores. The questions include the reason for the cancellation, the official communication on the matter and the financial details of the agreement between the Regional Government or Visit Azores and Ryanair," reads the press release.
Carlos Silva warned that the lack of a connection between Ponta Delgada and Nuremberg is "yet another setback for tourism development and the mobility of Azoreans", pointing out that "in just a few months, the Azores have already seen a significant reduction in Ryanair's operations".
"It is essential to guarantee transparency and accountability in this process, taking into account the impact that these decisions have on connectivity and the economic development of our region," he said.
On 1 September 2023, the government of the Azores announced that Ryanair would continue to fly to the archipelago with around 2,032 annual flights.
"In addition to the Lisbon/Ponta Delgada and Porto/Ponta Delgada connections, as well as Lisbon/Terceira and Porto/Terceira, during the summer, there will also be connections to Stansted (London, United Kingdom) and Nuremberg (Germany), which are already expected to be strengthened in 2025 compared to the operation planned for 2024," the executive said at the time, revealing that for the summer 13 connections a week would be scheduled between Ponta Delgada and Terceira with Lisbon, seven with Porto, one with Stansted and one with Nuremberg.
