Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Opposition party supports owner of boat that sank, killing 98

Maputo, April 22,2024 (Lusa) - The president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) said on Monday that the largest opposition party will give "legal assistance" to the owner of the boat that sank this month in Nampula, causing 98 deaths, and criticised the government.
"The state must start paying for its irresponsibility," wrote Ossufo Momade, after visiting the administrative post of Lunga, Mossuril district in Nampula province at the weekend, where the fishing boat set sail on 7 April, sinking around 100 metres off the coast of the island of Mozambique, while carrying 130 people on board, fleeing for fear of a local outbreak of cholera.
"We have experienced first-hand the suffering of our people due to total abandonment, with the island of Mozambique as the main refuge for their basic health and commercial needs, in addition to the lack of quality access roads, electricity, health posts, markets and an agricultural development centre," described the Renamo leader.
The accident killed 98 people, including 55 children, 34 women and nine men, with 16 survivors reported. According to the Mozambican maritime authorities, the fishing boat was not authorised to carry passengers, nor did it have the conditions to do so.
The owner and a person in charge of the boat have been arrested, Rosa Chaúque, the police spokeswoman for Nampula province, told Lusa at the time.
"It was with sadness that we followed the arrest of the boat's owner, Hassane, for having authorised the entry of the population on his boat free of charge as a way of supporting the people, mostly children, without, however, checking maritime safety procedures," continued the Renamo leader.
Momade added that the detention "has upset the local population and that the fault for this act lies not with the sailor or the boat's owner, but with the people themselves, who demanded it" from the boat's owner.
"Following his request for legal assistance, we will give him due legal assistance for his freedom and the consequent accountability of the state," the politician guaranteed.
On 18 April, the Mozambican government announced the construction of a road and a bridge in the area of the shipwreck as a way of preventing the transport of passengers in unsafe boats.
President Filipe Nyusi "directed the government to immediately work towards (...) rehabilitating the 36-kilometre road linking Naguema to Lunga," said the minister of industry and trade.
Silvino Moreno was speaking at a plenary meeting of parliament dedicated to questions from MPs to the executive.
"Work has already begun, and a 210-metre bridge will also be built over the Monapo River so that communication between Naguema and Lunga can be done easily and to discourage the use of small boats," Moreno said.
The cabinet decreed three days of national mourning following the accident, with several of Mozambique's partner countries expressing their solidarity with the tragedy.
