Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Vila Gaming hopes to attract 40,000 visitors to Óbidos

Óbidos, Portugal, April 18,2024(Lusa) - Óbidos Gaming will take place in Óbidos, near Leiria between May 4 and 12, with an investment of €450,000, through which the organisation expects to attract 40,000 visitors.
The event that "transforms a medieval village into a gaming village" will be held for the second year running, after "the impact of the first edition led the municipality to decide to repeat the event this year", instead of maintaining the biennial frequency initially planned, explained the councillor for administrative modernisation at Óbidos Town Hall, Telmo Félix.
Presented today, Óbidos Vila Gaming will represent 81 hours of events spread over 15 areas of the town, where visitors will have "more than 70 gaming chairs, 50 consoles, 12 VR devices, 10 simulators, 70 monitors, 40 PCs and more than 40 arcades".
Between 4 and 12 May, there will be more than 40 tournaments, eight talks and eight workshops on issues related to what is "the biggest entertainment industry" and the "preferred entertainment of the new generations", said Pedro Silveira, from the organisation, explaining that "a video game sells more copies than any song or film".
In the 2024 edition, the event will feature a games room dedicated to the 80s and 90s, where arcade games s such as 'Pacman', 'Metal', 'Slug' or 'Super Hang On' will be present; an area dedicated to video games, with some classics and the latest novelties, and a 'Sports Arena', where tournaments will be held between the main Portuguese players, in games such as CS, EA 'Sports FC 24' and 'Rocket League'.
Virtual reality and augmented reality will also have their own space where the public will be able to "live different experiences without leaving their seat", including, according to the organisation, "putting on another skin, getting to know different parts of the Universe and being the hero of many adventures".
An immersive experience that will take the public on a "chilling experience in a haunted house" or a stage where you can play games and dance with family and friends are other offerings at the event, along with an area dedicated to the youngest, with interactive games, a football stadium or the 'Fortnite Bus'.
At the presentation, held at the Óbidos Technology Park, the organisation also highlighted an area for retrogames and the Tech Lab, a space for demonstrating educational projects in the area of gaming, developed in partnership with the park and the Josefa de Óbidos School.
The partnership with the Óbidos Technology Park will be marked in this edition by the "Game Dev Sessions", an event that includes six workshops on the video games industry, with the presence of some companies in the sector and giving young participants the chance to present their portfolios and try to be recruited.
For those interested in taking part in the "Game Dev Sessions", a bus will be available to travel between Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha and the Technology Park.
Around 20 national influencers, such as Pedro Tim and Salvador Galeão, will also take part in the event.
Organised by the company Óbidos Criativa, EM, the municipality of Óbidos, the company E2Tche and the Óbidos Technology Park, Vila Gaming represents an investment of €450,000, with the organisers expecting to attract 40,000 people.
Entry to the event ranges from € to €10, and those interested can opt for a nine-day pass, which costs €25.
