Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Out-going PM Costa thanks police for making it one of safest in world

Lisbon, March 26, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's outgoing prime minister presented his farewell greetings on Tuesday to the Armed Forces and the Internal Security System(SSI), thanking the men and women who make Portugal "one of the most peaceful and secure countries in the world".
"I would like to express my deepest thanks to all the women and men who work every day in the different organisations, in the different forces and services, in the Armed Forces, for helping to ensure security in our country," said António Costa.
After considering security one of the "most valuable public goods", the outgoing Prime Minister said that Portuguese society can collectively be proud of living in "one of the most peaceful and secure countries in the world".
In his farewell speech to the SSI, António Costa recalled that over the course of almost 23 years in which he held various positions, he had the "privilege" of helping to structure the current internal security system.
He pointed to the example of the law on the organisation of criminal investigation, which clarified the competences of the Judicial Police, the PSP and the GNR, and which, he said, made it possible to greatly strengthen this area in the country and its capacity to reduce crime rates.
The outgoing prime minister also highlighted his contribution to the legislative framework for criminal investigation, which provided the police, especially the Judiciary, with a "not insignificant arsenal" for combating financial and economic crime, as well as the transformation of the security coordinating office into what is now the Secretary General of the SSI.
"It was absolutely essential to have the capacity for effective coordination and synergies between the different forces and services, and that meant having a robust centre for coordinating activities," he said.
António Costa also made a point of highlighting Civil Protection in this context, saying that in recent years it has been possible to "significantly strengthen" its capacity for action, with "results that are clear to see" in areas such as fighting forest fires.
As for the Armed Forces, António Costa wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that, "in uncertain times, more than ever", they are absolutely essential to the country.
"I thank the dedication and commitment of the women and men who serve here and who, on national territory and around the world, ensure national defence and give prestige to Portugal in our bilateral and multilateral participation for cooperation and collective defence," he said.
