Lusa - Business News - Angola: Roads claim nine lives a day in 2023

Luanda,Nov.19,2023(Lusa)-Angola recorded 12,069 road accidents between January and October this year,resulting in 2,607 deaths and 14,950 injuries, according to the Angolan vice-president, Esperança da Costa, who warned of the increase in road accidents.
The figures indicate that, on average, nine people died every day this year on Angola's roads until October 2023.
In a message released today, as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Victims, Esperança da Costa expressed "enormous concern" at the "negative trend" and "growing tendency" of road accidents in Angola in 2023.
In view of the current situation, she stressed, the Angolan government has made the reduction of road accidents a priority, as well as "continuous intervention in signalling, rehabilitation, construction of infrastructures and increased technical capacity for traffic inspection".
"It is essential to join forces and act together to reverse the current situation, marked by high rates of accidents, deaths, mutilations and material damage, which shows how much we need to reflect on changing course and the collective challenges we have to face in order to achieve the desirable peace and safety on the road," the Angolan vice-president said.
After the first report, the Secretariat of Angola's National Road and Traffic Planning Council clarified that, "by mistake, the statistics on deaths and injuries were changed," with the correct version being "2607 deaths and 14,950 injuries in the period" from January to October 2023.
