Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: Country joins African Finance Corporation

Lagos, Nigeria, Nov.19,2023(Lusa) - Sao Tome and Príncipe and Burundi have joined the African Finance Corporation (AFC), a multilateral entity that aims to foster investment in infrastructure and improving the operating environment in developing African countries.
"Despite significant macroeconomic headwinds, the AFC has doubled its membership over the past five years, strengthening its mandate to address regional challenges and catalyse private sector-led infrastructure development across the continent," reads the AFC statement sent to Lusa.
The addition of Sao Tome and Príncipe "diversifies the outreach to Portuguese-speaking countries; the archipelago joins the Lusophone members that are already members of the AFC, including Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde," the statement added, which notes the AFC's intention to help the country develop its energy sector.
"The Corporation plans to support the country in its goal of generating half of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 and also intends to support the nation in developing a sustainable transport infrastructure network that is resilient to the impacts of climate change," the document added.
Sao Tome and Príncipe, the AFC said, citing data from the World Food Programme, is "particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, rising sea levels and extreme temperatures due to its geographical location and isolation".
In both regions, which include Burundi and Sao Tome and Príncipe, AFC has deepened its involvement, having "secured transformative projects such as Cabeolica's 26-megawatt wind project in Cabo Verde or Red Sea Power's 60-megawatt project in Djibouti, as well as investing in the first gold mine in Nigeria's Osun state, the Segilola Gold mine.
"We welcome Sao Tome and Príncipe and Burundi to the AFC community and look forward to deepening collaboration with the two nations to help advance their economic development and industrialisation," said AFC President Samaila Zubairu, quoted in the statement.
"I am convinced that together we will quickly identify transformative projects to fuel import substitution, value addition, job creation and improvements in the abundant natural wealth of both countries," he concluded.
